When constructing new riverbanks, soil erosion often occurs before vegetation can establish stability. BESE-elements provide an effective, sustainable solution—preventing erosion, enabling plant growth, and fostering a resilient riverbank ecosystem.
This pilot project began in autumn 2023.
Nature-Based Solutions for Resilient Riverbanks
This pilot project, initiated by the Province of North Holland, uses BESE-elements as a natural riverbank lining. These biodegradable structures are installed along the river slope to prevent erosion, stabilize the soil, and create the ideal conditions for native vegetation to establish and thrive. By combining erosion control with habitat restoration, the project promotes a resilient riverbank ecosystem that supports biodiversity and improves water quality.

How It Works
Three layers of BESE-elements were placed and anchored along the riverbank slope. These layers:
- Reduce soil instability and wave energy
- Provide a foundation for vegetation such as reeds to root and grow
- Guarantee future soil stabilization as plants mature
Maintenance-Free Riverbanks
Our approach harnesses natural processes. BESE-elements:
- Prevent erosion during critical early stages
- Support germination and plant growth
- Fully biodegrade within 10–20 years, leaving a stable, nature-rich riverbank without costly maintenance or soil remediation
Ecosystem Restoration Benefits
As vegetation flourishes, the riverbank becomes:
- More biodiverse – attracting fish, amphibians, and birds
- More resilient – improving water quality and reducing flood risk
- A carbon sink – storing CO₂ in growing biomass
