The project: Ijburg, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A newly constructed apartment complex in Amsterdam, Ijburg also got 6 jettys for the mooring of small boats. The canals in Amsterdam a polluted due to urbanization.

Solutions: Mussels to filter water and improve water quality

The contractor and city council, wanted to improve the water quality in the canals around the apartment complex. They came across the BESE-elements.

Design: BESE-elements for mussel settlement

Under each of five of the jetties three blocks of 25-layered BESE-elements were placed to provide habitat for mussels. Over time mussels can attach to the BESE-elements and start to filter the water, improving the water quality.
